Alcohol abuse damages kidney, liver says Prof Adeyeye, NAFDAC Boss

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised fresh concerns over the dangers associated with excessive alcohol consumption, warning that prolonged abuse can cause serious damage to vital organs, particularly the kidneys and liver.

NAFDAC also linked alcohol abuse to wider social and security challenges, warning that excessive drinking can contribute to behaviours that encourage violence and criminal activities, including banditry.

The agency’s warning comes amid growing concerns over the accessibility and consumption of alcoholic beverages in Nigeria, particularly products that are sold in small sachets and other easily accessible packages.

According to NAFDAC, the widespread availability of such products can make alcohol easier to obtain and consume, raising concerns about excessive drinking among young people and other vulnerable members of society.

The kidneys and liver are particularly important in processing and eliminating substances from the body, making prolonged alcohol abuse a significant health concern.

NAFDAC has therefore continued to push for stronger regulation of alcoholic beverages while warning manufacturers, distributors and consumers about the consequences of violating established safety and regulatory standards.

The agency also urged Nigerians to exercise caution in their consumption of alcoholic beverages and to recognise that what may begin as recreational drinking can develop into harmful consumption with serious consequences.

Beyond the health implications, NAFDAC’s latest warning highlights the broader social cost of alcohol abuse, particularly where excessive consumption contributes to impaired judgement, violence and other forms of antisocial behaviour.

The agency called for greater public awareness and responsible consumption as part of efforts to reduce alcohol-related health and social problems across the country.
